Glasgow Airport donates £11,000 to school eco programme
Glasgow Airport has renewed acquaintances with an innovative environmental project, which will teach children about their carbon footprint. The Tree Amigos programme, which was created by Trees4Scotland, has been funded by the Glasgow Airport FlightPath Fund for the past three years and is designed to teach primary school children about the environment and climate change. The schools involved this year - Killermont Primary, Our Holy Redeemers Primary, Whitecrook Primary, St Claire's Primary and Rashielea Primary - will help plant hundreds of trees across Central Scotland in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint. Each of the five primary schools will plant 75 trees in Teaghlach Wood, located near the village of Comrie, Perthshire. Ronald Leitch, security operations manager, said: “The Tree Amigos is a great example of how we can all play a part, however small, in safeguarding the natural environment. Over the years, the schools involved have shown great enthusiasm for the project and I’m sure the young people taking part in this year’s programme will learn some valuable lessons about the environment. George Adam, MSP for Paisley, said:”Trees4Scotland is making fantastic progress in restoring Scotland’s native woodland. This project, along with the involvement of local young people, will help to promote appreciation of the country’s natural habitat. Once again Glasgow Airport is playing its part in being a responsible member of Renfrewshire’s community.” Founder of Trees4Scotland, Angus Crabbie, added: “It is great to have the support of Glasgow Airport again this year. They share our vision in regards to the expansion of the programme and with their help we hope to attract other corporate partners to fund more and more schools.” To recognise the great work of The Tree Amigos programme, two Rowan trees will be planted at The Hub, Glasgow Airport – across from the international arrivals area. The Rowan is known as the “Traveller’s Tree” in Celtic mythology, preventing those on a journey from getting lost. Editor’s notes
